    Mrs. Stewart's
    ®
Bluing was introduced to the market by wholesale grocer traveling salesman Al Stewart. He always carried a bottle which he made from a formula he had acquired in his home with the help of his family. When Mr. Stewart began searching for someone to manufacture his bluing, his path crossed with Luther Ford. Mr. Ford had lost his Five & Ten Cent store to a tragic fire started from an eruption of fireworks in his store. Realizing the potential of the safer bluing business, Luther Ford acquired the rights to Mrs Stewart's
    ®
Bluing from Al Stewart with his first documented sales in July of 1883.
The Owens-Illinois Glass Company grew out of the 1829 merger of Owens Bottle Company and Illinois Glass Company. The bottle's bottom markings which include "Duraglas" which was introduced in 1940 along with a single digit date code, used in the 1930-40's.
The bottle is approximately 2½" in diameter x 4½" tall. Although the bottle is actually clear in color, it retains a blue cast from its original contents. Most of its original label is intact, showing aging stains and a streak of the bluing which is interesting considering that the bottle also retains most of the hot wax that was applied around the rim specifically to the liquid from ruining down the side of the bottle when dispensing the bluing. These bottles were capped with imported Portuguese corks specifically made for MSB and inserted in red wooden caps, their patented "No-Drip" process.
The bottle is in very good condition. Please super size the listing images to view the overall condition in detail!
