Since 1634 the town of Oberammergau has held a Passion Play almost every ten years. (cancelled for wars) The theater has a "deal" with God for sparing their city from the ravishes of the Plague to present a Passion of the Christ play to be held outdoors.
A lot has changed over the decades and the play has become so popular that they perform it for several weeks which means lots of weather possibilities. In a very creative decision townspeople built the theater to protect the audience but still keep their commitment of an outdoor play. There is a sliding roof that covers the stage in the event of inclement weather, but the audience is always protected.
